Washington in Flames

On August 24, 1814, following the defeat of United States troops at the Battle of Baldensburg, British forces invaded and captured the capital city of the United States. They burned public buildings only, under orders to respect private property. By sunset on August 25, they were gone.

This exhibit explores some of the places which were and were not burnt by the British. Navigate by the list of places or by the map.
