Title
Sewall House
Description
Owned by Mr. Sewall, 1814 the house had been rented by Albert Gallatin and further sublet to local residents. Americans, possibly members of the retreating militia, fired shots at the British as they entered the city. No British soldiers were wounded but General Ross' horse was killed. In retaliation, British troops entered the house, drove out the residents as they searched for the shooter, and finally set it ablaze. It was one of the few pieces of private property to be destroyed by the British.
