Greenleaf Point

Greenleaf Point, also called Buzzard Point, is now part of Fort McNair. In 1814, it was the site of American powder magazines. On the afternoon of August 25th, British troops came to the Point to destroy as much American gun and cannon powder as they could. Unfortunately, they accidentally ignited a store of powder hidden in a well. Some British soldiers were killed and others badly injured. Some of the worst hurt were left behind in the care of American doctors when the British retreated.
